A few weeks ago we offered First Aid Training, equipping participants with vital life-saving skills, and a Mental Health Awareness workshop, where we explored how to better support ourselves and others. Both sessions were hands-on, informative, and empowering, helping to build confidence in real-life situations.

We’re always on the lookout for new volunteers to join our team. Whether you’re interested in supporting events, gardening, helping at the community hub, or just want to give back in any way you can—we’d love to hear from you.

Winter Fest 2024 https://gorebridge.org.uk/winter-fest/ https://gorebridge.org.uk/winter-fest/#respond Sun, 15 Dec 2024 10:07:59 +0000 https://gorebridge.org.uk/?p=13577 As the frost settles and the fairy lights are packed away, we’re still glowing from the warmth and joy of Gorebridge Beacon Winterfest 2024. Held in the heart of our community, this year’s event was a true celebration of creativity, connection, and winter magic.

Highlights from Week

Winter in the Garden
Our garden space was transformed into a twinkling wonderland, draped in fairy lights and full of charm. It became the perfect place to pause, take in the magic, and snap a few festive photos.

Live Music
Inside, the hall was filled with the sound of live local talent. From acoustic sets to joyful seasonal sing-alongs, the music brought warmth and energy to every corner of the Beacon.

Breakfast with Santa
We kicked things off with one of the most magical moments of the day—Breakfast with Santa. Little ones enjoyed a cozy morning meal while meeting the big man himself. There were smiles, stories, and plenty of excitement as Santa listened to Christmas wishes and posed for festive photos.

Christmas Crafts & Wreath Making
Craft tables were buzzing with activity all day long! Children (and more than a few adults) got stuck into festive crafts, while our wreath-making sessions offered a slower, creative space for people to get hands-on and take home something beautiful.

Craft Fair
Our craft fair featured an inspiring selection of local makers and small businesses. From handmade gifts to tasty treats, it was a great way to support local and find something unique for under the tree.

Thank You: we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who made Winterfest possible—our volunteers, workshop leaders, stallholders, musicians, and all of you who came along and filled the day week joy. Your support is what keeps events like this at the heart of Gorebridge life. Until next time, we’re already dreaming up ideas for Winterfest 2025, and we’d love to hear your feedback or ideas. Let’s keep building something beautiful—together.

Have a great holiday! And Happy New Year when it comes.

A few pictures for you:

Gorebridge Community Pantry https://gorebridge.org.uk/gorebridge-community-pantry/ https://gorebridge.org.uk/gorebridge-community-pantry/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2023 13:10:21 +0000 https://gorebridge.org.uk/?p=10312 What are the opening times?

The current opening time or the pantry is Tuesday 3pm – 5pm. As well as collections of food that are unsold or surplus from local businesses, FairShare GO, your pantry members fee will ensure the Pantry is topped up each week.

How does it work?

The Pantry is open to all households/residents of EH23, anyone who lives in this Post Code area can apply to become members of the Pantry and ‘shop’ there once a week. Membership is limited to 1 person per household. Membership is free, and weekly ‘shop’ costs £3.50 which is put back into buying stock into the Pantry the following week. Each member receives 10 credits for £3.50, and these credits can be used to ‘spend’ on fresh, ambient or store-cupboard ingredients. If available, free bread will be offered, and volunteers will make each member a bag of fresh fruit and veggies.

When is it open?

Tuesday’s 3 – 5PM.

Where?

Gorebridge Beacon, Hunterfield Road, Gorebridge, EH23 4TT (that big class building next to the church and in front of the leisure centre).

Donate

Would you like to donate to the Gorebridge Community Pantry? Please click here.

What are the aims of community pantries?

  • Reduce food insecurity
  • Help you and your family reduce tyour monthly/weekly outgoings
  • Minimise food waste
  • Redistribute surplus food from supermarkets, farms, and local businesses that would otherwise go to waste
  • Promote sustainability and responsible food consumption

And…

Encourage Community Support & Engagement

  • Foster a sense of solidarity by encouraging people to donate or volunteer.
  • Build stronger local networks where people look out for one another.
  • Reduces stigma by making food assistance feel like a normal shopping experience.
  • Promote Healthy Eating & Well-being
  • Provide fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthy food options.

Signing Up

You can sign up at any Pantry opening time, or pop into the Beacon and ask for a membership form. The Community Pantry is first-come, first-served, however as each member has 10 credits to ‘spend’ there is a fair distribution of food. Many people have told us that the £3.50 is worth it for the veggies and fruit.

What food is available at the Pantry?

It varies from week to week. As we order from Fairshare, and receive donations, and top up we can’t guarantee the same produce each week. We will have fresh fruit and veggies, bakery items, store cupboard/cooking essentials. Often we have toiletries and cleaning items. Pantry volunteers will be able to share with you how to cook items if you aren’t sure.

Who runs the Gorebridge Community Pantry

Gorebridge Community Development Trust runs the Pantry at Beacon. There is an amazing group of volunteers who keep stock up to date, shop, sort, set up, display, serve members and make the pantry a wonderful community event each week.

In order to sustain the Pantry we will be seeking further funding, organising fundraisers, and all weekly shop fees go back into sustaining. If you would like to volunteer (admin, in the Pantry, setting up), have a fundraising idea please do get in touch here.

Want to support the Pantry but you don’t need to shop weekly?

Do you mean you want to donate to the Pantry? That would be so amazing. Pop into the Beacon and speak to a member of staff, or contact us here.

Are there any other Community Pantries in Midlothian?

Yes, please visit Midlothian Councils website here.
