We have a popular community cafe at the Beacon, we want to bring it to you
The story of behind why we have created the Beacon Bakery is simple.
When the Beacon opened, we also opened a community cafe. The community cafe is like 'the party in the kitchen' at the Beacon.
We bake onsite every day the cafe is open.
We have welcomed young people on placement, and have the most amazing group of volunteers working along side us.
We love to bake. Right before pandemic hit the plans were to teach young people how to bake great bread and cakes. That will happen. But it's on hold for now.
You always take things home with you, so why can't we offer to get them delivered? We can.
We want to the kitchen at the Beacon to be well used. We are doing this with local bakers and chefs with micro businesses coming in to utilse the space we have available.
We are realising the affects Covid is having on us, and we are bringing it forward plans for 2022 into 2020.
We are so lucky at the Beacon that it has a community cafe and kitchen. Before Covid-19 we were open Mon - Sat during the day to the community. While we served you we were usually in the background catering for an event or conference that was on, or getting ready for a community event in the evening.
We have always wanted to bake more. Cook more. Offer more training and employment opportunities.
Covid has had such a negative effect on so many areas of the Beacon, however the kitchen and food has played a crucial role, in particular that of Gorebridge Resilience, when at one point we were up at producing and delivering 600 meals a week.
We have started the Beacon Bakery 2 years earlier than planned. Transparency: because we have to pivot. To create enterprises that will serve the community and meet social outcomes. That means that we aren't in this to make a profit. We are non-profit. We are doing this to provide a service and in doing so hopefully to create an additional income stream for the Trust and the Beacon, and to be less reliant on funding.
By ordering bakery items from the Beacon Bakery in return for you receiving your goods, you are making a difference and doing something good. This could be supporting a group that uses the Beacon, paying for a light switch that goes on when someone is receiving help and guidance, or for the ingredients for a lunch club or community supper.
