Coal mining played a significant part in shaping our community and culture. Over the years local people have talked about the lack of any visual recognition of this fact in the village and expressed a desire to rectify the situation. This note is intended stimulate discussion and, hopefully lead to the formulation of a Community Action Plan.
Background
There were 3 principles mines in the village; Vogrie, Gore and the Emily. There were also several small mines in the surrounding area. The mines led to the opening of the original Gorebridge railway station which was connected to the “Innocent Railway” used to transport the high quality Arniston coal to Edinburgh and Leith.
Way forward
- Research the History; it is essential we have accurate data on the mines and the casualties. A recent piece in the local paper claimed that 66 miners lost their lives at an Arniston Colliery, this is almost certain to be inaccurate. We are compiling a list of the men and boys who fell in the course of their mining work, it can be found here.
- Community Engagement we need to ensure that all interested parties and groups have the opportunity to participate and comment on any plans.
- Options include some or all of the following;
- A significant show piece sculpture
- A memorial to the dead
- Information Boards at the mine sites
- Mining connection with the Station
- Waymark miners paths
Funding
Several potential sources are available but we need to have an agreed plan before we start looking for funds.
Action
Contact all community groups, invite comments and call for volunteers to join a working group to take the project forward.
