Great news – Newbyres castle has been accepted into the Adopt-a-Monument scheme. This is a nation-wide community archaeology scheme that provides practical advice, training and help raising funds. It has earmarked mid-December for the first stage of vegetation clearance. This will be done by a group of volunteer Edinburgh University archaeology students and led by Archaeology Scotland.
Local volunteers are welcome to join us for however long you can spare. Please get in touch with Linda at our office of you would like to get involved.
This is all in preparation for an archaeological survey and further investigations to be carried out in Spring 2017. We will then start removing the rubble in and around the castle ruins. This will be supervised by an archaeologist and if we are lucky we might find some ancient artefacts!
Further down the road we intend making the area into a garden for play and learning. This idea has been warmly received by Archaeology Scotland, Midlothian Council and Historic Scotland and follows on from our successful Wooploft project done with Tynewater primary school.
