You know that person you’ve invented in your head?
The one with a story. An opinion. A secret. Possibly a terrible attitude.
What if you gave them a voice?
This is a scriptwriting course with a difference. You’ll learn how to create characters, find their voice and write short pieces for performance - monologues, scenes and stories that can make people laugh, think, cringe or see a little bit of themselves.
You don’t need to be a writer.
You don’t need a degree in anything.
You don’t even need a good idea to start with.
You just need curiosity, a willingness to play with page, and perhaps face something that’s been rattling around your head for longer than it should have.
Over the course, you’ll develop your own pieces with support from the tutor and the group. You’ll write. You’ll experiment. You’ll probably delete things. You’ll write them again.
And then, rather wonderfully, you’ll perform it. Or, we will find a willing person/group to make that happen.
Because what’s the point of giving a character a voice if nobody gets to hear them?
This is about finding stories in unexpected places, discovering what happens when you pull the words from the page to the stage, and having the courage to share it along the way.

The 8 week workshop starts on Saturday October 3rd 11 - 1PM at the Gorebridge Beacon.
Who
The 8 week workshop is free to attend (funded through Inspiring Scotland), priority places will be given to residents of EH23.

Workshop Tutor Lorna Duncan McLaughlin
The workshops will be led by Lorna Duncan McLaughlin.
Lorna is a screenwriter, playwright, actor and workshop leader.
She writes mostly for TV (BBC Scotland’s River City) but she's also had plays produced at Glasgow’s Oran Mor and the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, and at the Byre Theatre St Andrews. She also writes and directs for The Good Life Group, a group of people with SEN who run training programmes for their service providers.
As an actor she has worked in theatre, film and TV in the UK and abroad, and she teaches both acting and writing. She is most interested in telling stories about identity, relationships, belongingness, and of course, comedy.
Her debut novel, Original Sins, was shortlisted for the Debut Dagger in 2018, and was published in Feb 2026. Original Sins is a finalists for the 2026 Bloody Scotland Scottish Crime Debut of the Year.
